The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs a once a day train with a steam and coal engine to illustrate how access to the tea plantation was made possible in the late 1800’s. When not serving as the “tourist train” a different engine runs between towns as a commuter option. The steam and coal engine version was loud, smelly and quite unique for most of the passengers. While an engineering marvel and a UNESCO work heritage site, the train is undoubtedly contributing to the significant air quality challenges (largely from other parts of India and nearby countries). When I was there, I never saw the Himalaya Mountains or any mountains but I heard that during Covid the Himalaya Mountains were visible for the first time for many.
